My name is Ryan Luckman, I have helped out with Folkestone Pride since around July 2018. Though I haven’t been a part of the Folkestone Pride family for long I have a lot to offer. I am keen on helping Folkestone Pride make big strides towards success. I have already given up countless hours fundraising and helping things run smoothly on 2018’s Pride.
I was born in Hythe but raised in New Romney. Other than a small amount I grew up very uneducated about the LGBTQIA community, it’s been over the past few years I’ve been introduced to different LGBTQIA people. The first introduction to a transgender person I had was when I was in year 10. My teacher transitioned from a male to a female. This first introduction was a key learning curve for me as I was able to fully understand and ask any question I was previously unsure of to someone who had gone through this first hand. This is arguably one of the most valuable lessons I learned in my time at school.
One of the reasons I have gotten involved with Folkestone Pride, is I believe more people should have these experiences and life lessons taught to them at an early age to educate the next generation.
I have a strong set of skills that I hope to use in being a director of Folkestone Pride. Skills including website development, leadership, marketing strategies, strategic planning and I’m also a mechanic so maybe could fix a Folkestone Pride car in future?
I am currently studying in college and have started making moves to include the local colleges and schools by having them involved with Folkestone Pride. This will hopefully strengthen the community for students and the greater community alike.
